HealthPoint Medical Group is pleased to announce their Cardiac Surgery practice, combined with St. Joseph’s Hospital’s (SJH) Heart Institute personnel, have been awarded the highest possible distinction by the Society of Thoracic Surgery (STS) National Adult Cardiac Surgery Database: a 3 Star rating.  Only 14% of hospitals in the country achieved this 3 Star rating status.

The SJH cardiothoracic surgery team consists exclusively of HealthPoint’s Cardiac, Vascular and Thoracic surgeons: Drs. Jack J. Messina, J. Crayton Pruitt, Jr., and Andrew J. Sherman.  Their accomplishment is a tremendous feat, considering they did it in only nine months.  Through their participation in this program, these surgeons demonstrate their commitment to providing the highest possible level of care to their expanding patient population.

The STS rating system compares the quality of cardiac surgery among hospitals across the country. National data from the previous12 months is analyzed to evaluate these areas of the cardiac surgery program: avoidance of mortality, avoidance of major complications, use of arteries as bypass grafts, and appropriate (evidence-based) medication administration.
