Community Life Local attractions and recreational activities include the 300-acre Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, ranked among the top four zoos in the country; the Florida Aquarium; Adventure Island water park; and several world-renowned golf courses. Our central location is just minutes from the Gulf beaches and easy access to other day-trip destinations such as Walt Disney World in Orlando and the Kennedy Space Center in Titusville. As for sports, the Buccaneers (NFL), Lightning (NHL), and Rays (MLB), call Tampa Bay home. The area is also Spring Training headquarters for several major and minor baseball teams including the New York Yankees. Our arts and cultural activities include the David A Straz, Jr. Center for the Performing Arts, the largest performing arts complex south of the Kennedy Center and home to the Patel Conservatory; the Tampa Museum of Art which features the Southeast's largest collection of Greek and Roman art; the Henry B. Plant Museum located in the University of Tampa, formerly the old Tampa Bay Hotel and a national historic landmark; and the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) with over 400,000 square feet of permanent interactive exhibits and a planetarium. Tampa’s average annual temperature of 72 degrees allows year-round enjoyment of many outdoor activities. Our waterfront includes two bays, two rivers, and many area lakes. From Historic Hyde Park to the prestigious Westchase community, Tampa offers lifestyle opportunities to suit all tastes. Public Schools Florida citizens voted in 2002 to reduce the number of students per teacher. By the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year, the maximum number of students assigned to a teacher are; 1) Pre-Kindergarten-Grade 3, 18 students; Grades 4 through 8, 22 students; and Grades 9 through 12, 25 students. A total of 16 Hillsborough County public high schools, almost 60%, were listed on Newsweek’s 2010 list of America’s Best High Schools. Hillsborough Community College (21,293 students) – HCC ranks 9th in degree production among U.S. community colleges. It has five primary campus locations, two satellite locations, a very active distance learning program (eCampus), and a comprehensive corporate training center (Corporate Training Center @ HCC). St. Leo University (14,000 students) - This Catholic institution offers more than 40 undergraduate majors and specializations and graduate degrees in business administration, education, teaching, criminal justice, and theology. University of Tampa – (6,200 students) – Offers more than 120 areas of study. Their MBA program is one of the largest in Florida and they are one of the elite private schools in the Southeast to have AACSB accreditation. Remington College (1,244 students) – Formerly known as Tampa Technical Institute, Remington College offers Associate's and Diploma programs and is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC). Military Presence MacDill is also headquarters of the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM), the Unified Combatant Command charged with overseeing the various Special Operations Commands (SOC or SOCOM) of the Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps of the United States Armed Forces. The command is part of the Department of Defense. MacDill adds a welcome 25,000 active duty service personnel, civilians, and family members to Tampa’s population.
